Speaking of V-type 8-cylinder engines, the first thing that comes to mind is the American V8 engine, which features an exhaust sound that resonates with the body. However, V8 engines are installed not only in American cars but in cars all over the world, and of course there are excellent V8 engines in Japan, where relatively small displacement engines are mainstream.

We will introduce three excellent V8 engines manufactured by Japanese manufacturers, recognized by the V8 powerhouse America.

[Toyota 1UZ-FE]Without this, there may not be the current Lexus

The 1UZ-FE is a 4.0L V8 DOHC engine developed for the Lexus LS400 and Celsior, which were launched in the United States in 1989.

At that time, V8 engines that adopted DOHC were rare in the United States. In addition, the 1UZ-FE uses an aluminum alloy up to the oil pan to reduce weight, achieving a high level of low vibration, low noise, and low fuel consumption while ensuring sufficient power performance.

Especially with regard to vibration, even if the engine is started with a champagne tower built on the bonnet of the Lexus LS, even if the engine speed is increased, not a single drop will spill out of the glass. was broadcast in the United States, the newcomer Lexus became an opportunity to attract attention.

With its high reliability and low vibration, the 1UZ-FE shook not only America, but also Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and there is an anecdote that it had a great influence on subsequent vehicle development.

[Nissan VK56DE]V8 for large displacement and high output SUVs and pickup trucks

Nissan’s VK56DE type 5.6L V8 engine was developed for large pickup trucks and SUVs. The VK56DE was the VK56DE that expanded the displacement of the VK45DE, which until then had a reputation in the United States for its high reliability, and achieved even higher output and torque.

One of the reasons why Nissan’s pickup trucks were so popular in the U.S. is that it was easier to obtain high output than American-made pickup trucks, which often use V8 OHV engines.

The VK56DE is installed in the pickup truck Titan that appeared in 2003. Since then, it has been installed in SUVs such as Pathfinder, Armada, and Infiniti QX56, and has been driving the large pickup truck market in the United States for 10 years.

The VK56DE, which has been tuned to 690PS or more, is also used as a racing engine for Le Mans, the GT1 Championship, and the Dakar Rally.

[Toyota 2UR-GSE]Toyota’s most powerful V8

The UR type is a 5.0L V8 engine that succeeds the UZ type. Based on the 2UR-FSE installed in the Toyota Century and Lexus LS, the 2UR-GSE is a sports unit jointly developed with Yamaha.

The 2UR-GSE, a high-compression naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 direct-injection/port-injection combined engine, has a built-in mechanism that forcibly sucks oil from the engine head using a pump to ensure stable oil pressure even during high-speed turning. First installed in the Lexus IS F that appeared in 2008.

In addition, the 2UR-GSE features the same cross-plane crankshaft as the American V8, but the smooth rpm rise and clear engine sound like the Ferrari V8, which uses a flat-plane crankshaft.

After that, it was installed in Lexus F models such as GS and RC and Lexus LC, and the Lexus IS500 F Sports Performance released in August 2022 is also equipped with 2UR-GSE with output increased to 481PS.
